My girlfriend’s car started making a knocking noise when you pull away with a good amount of steering lock on. I’m pretty sure it’s a worn CV joint, is there anything else it could possibly be?

clicking would be a CV, knocking would be more of a wheel bearing or ball joint - usually

Better watch out for those clicking sounds at night. It’s not always coming from your car...

It is more of a clicking than a loud knocking. I had it up in the air and there’s no play in the ball joints or bearings. I believe the front bearings are newish too.

could be goddamn spiders too

click and knock are 2 distinct sounds when diagnosing via PC :)

Haha I’m not fantastic at explaining things.

I believe you are 99% on the button - worn CV’s have a distinctive sound, and moving at slow speed with full lock will bring up the same sound repeatedly.

Yeah I tested it a few times pulling away at full lock and reproduced the sound each time.

Sounds like a bad CV joint, my subaru made a kind of bound up popping noise, not quite a click, not quite a thunk. Don’t postpone the repair like someone I know with Jetta who drove 1500 miles on a bad CV axle, only to have it fail in the middle of no-where Washington in state.

Could be one of these peckers.
Also check ball joints, steering knuckles, & sway bar end links. Make/model/year of car would help too.

Fucking clickers. I always tried to keep a brick around in case I had to beat one to death.

Sounds like a CV to me.
CVs like to make their click/knock under engine load while in a tight turn. Like when you pull away from a stop sign, accelerating.
If you can replicate the noise pretty easily, try taking some throttle off (keep constant speed) if the noise goes away, it’s most likely the outer CV joint.
If the noise does not go away, then it could be a wheel bearing. Wheel bearings don’t care if you’re on the gas or not, and are more of a vibration than a click/knock most the time.

Will a worn CV joint sound go away once the car has been warmed up? I’ve been getting a knock from the front driver-side when taking more-than-slight turns, but only for the first mile or so after being cold. The rate of the knocking sound changes/correlates to speed.

The noise may seem to dimish as you drive, but the damage is done. Worst case, the CV may crack and drop a ball out, leaving you with no drive...

ok. thanks. I’ll get up under there sooner rather than later.

I can replicate the noise pulling away at full lock and never hear it at any other time so I think it’s definitely CV. I believe the wheel bearings are newish anyway.
